Prolonged Menstrual Cramping and Bleeding

Diana W.

Q: I would like a patch recommendation for my 14-year-old daughter, who experiences heavy cramping followed by prolonged bleeding. The cramping starts first, lasts many days, and is accompanied by red pimples that worsen before her period. She has sensitive, thin skin with difficulty healing, digestive issues (diarrhea or constipation), and her cycle now lasts about 30 days, with bleeding typically lasting 10 days. She is also anemic.

A: Dr. Dennis explained that, according to TCM, this condition is related to a build-up of toxins causing Liver Qi stagnation, which leads to cramping in the uterus. The Liver Qi circumvents the uterus, and the imbalance reflects a Wood attacking Earth pattern, causing digestive issues.

Diana W applied Aeon on the right side, SP6 Complete on the left, and X39 below the belly button, which seemed to help.

Dr. Dennis recommended:

  • Continuing the Five Element Detox protocol with Energy EnhancerAeonGlutathioneSP6 CompleteCarnosine, and X39.
  • Clearing stagnation by sweeping the Chong Mai channel, starting at SP4 and moving up toward the uterus to promote Qi and blood flow.
  • Rotating patch placements between SP4 and ST40, using SP6 Complete and Aeon or other yin-yang pairs.

Dr. Karen advised:

  • Dietary changes to support healing, ensuring sufficient water intake, and magnesium supplementation.
  • Applying Aeon using the brain balancing strategy, primarily to address possible polarity reversals during severe pain.
  • Using more Earth and Wood elements within the Five Element protocol.

Dr. Dennis also recommended some additional supplements. Use your discernment when considering these options.

Focus and Serotonin Support

Amy L.

Q: I would like a patch recommendation for improving focus during the day. Can I use Silent Nights during daytime hours to support serotonin, even though it’s typically used for melatonin and sleep?

A: Dr. Karen confirmed that Silent Nights can be used during the day. While it’s not well-established that serotonin directly improves focus, using Aeon on brain balancing points may help with mental clarity and regulation.

Additionally, listening to beta brainwave music may support focus and alertness in individuals who struggle with attention during the day.

Autonomic Nervous System Imbalance and Vagal Tone

Stephanie C.

Q: I would like a patch recommendation for symptoms related to vagus nerve dysfunction. I’m in my 20s and experience episodes of weakness, brain fog, confusion, agitation, anxiety, and heat in the body. My upper body feels hot during the day and cold at night. I also struggle with sleep, extreme fatigue, cold feet and toes that sometimes turn blue or black, and lower body spasms. I’ve used Carnosine and tan IceWave, which helped with the spasms, along with X39, Aeon, and Energy Enhancer during the day. What else can I do?

A: Dr. Dennis suggested using Energy Enhancer within the Five Element Strategy to help rebalance the Autonomic Nervous System. Applying Aeon at GV15 (at the back of the brainstem) may help reset temperature-regulating neurons.

For nighttime support, Dr. Dennis recommended placing IceWave on Liver 3 and possibly GB41 on the right side to assist with energy flow and thermal regulation. Maintaining proper hydration and electrolyte balance is also essential.

Digestive Discomfort and Detox Response

Dawn C.

Q: I would like a patch recommendation for bloating, belly cramping, and gas that started after using X39 below the belly button and on the lower back. I’ve also felt localized pain when placing X39 on GV14. I’ve been using SP6 Complete, Energy Enhancer, and Aeon—though I don’t tolerate Aeon well behind the right ear. I’ve only been using the patches for two weeks. Could this be a detox response, and how should I adjust my patch strategy?

A: Dr. Karen recommended continuing with the Five Element strategy if it’s providing benefit, but suggested possibly reducing the number of patches to ease the detox load. She also advised experimenting with different placements for Aeon, as tolerability can vary by location.

Dr. Dennis suggested the symptoms might be due to detoxification, possibly involving parasites. He recommended applying X39X49, or Aeon at Bladder 20 (bilaterally) or GV6 (below T11) to support Spleen and Liver function through the back SHU points.

Reintroducing X39 after rebalancing the nervous system may be beneficial. If Energy Enhancer is well-tolerated, it can continue to support overall energy flow and detoxification pathways.

Snoring and Sugar Regulation Support

John P.

Q: I would like a patch recommendation for adult snoring and blood sugar regulation. I’m not overweight, but my bed partner is frustrated with my snoring. I also want to support healthy glucose levels—what strategy would you suggest?

A: Dr. Dennis shared that according to Dr. Wolffson, elevating the head of the bed by 30 degrees may reduce snoring. He also recommended using Energy Enhancer on Heart 5 or a yin/yang pair to help regulate the tongue and prevent it from obstructing the airway during sleep.

Dr. Karen added that snoring may be linked to tongue weakness. Strategies such as mouth taping, mewing (tongue posture training), and patch placement can be helpful. For sugar regulation, AlavidaSP6 CompleteAeon, and X39 are all supportive based on available studies.

For additional digestive support and Qi flow through the middle JiaoStomach 21 may be a helpful point to include in the patching strategy.

Yin/Yang Patch Pair

Please note that when we mention the Yin-Yang patch pair, we mean a pairing of two patches, whereby the one the left is relatively yin compared to the patch on the right.

Examples of Yin/Yang phototherapy patching pairs are:

  • Energy Enhancer: The Tan patch is yin, the White patch is yang
  • IceWave: The Tan patch is yin, the White patch is yang
  • SP6C + Aeon: SP6C on the left (yin), Aeon on the right (yang)
  • Carnosine + Glutathione: Carnosine on the left (relatively yin), and Glutathione (yang) on the right
  • X39 + X49: X39 on the left (yin), X49 on the right (yang)

Yin/Yang meridians pair also refers to patching a Yin acupuncture point on the left side of the body and a Yang acupuncture point on the right side, belonging to the same element.

Examples of Yin/Yang element pairings:

Fire: Pericardium/Triple Burner (more emotional) or Heart/Small Intestine (more physical)

Earth: Spleen/Stomach

Metal: Lung/Large Intestine

Water: Kidney/Bladder

Wood: Liver/Gallbladder
