Ask The Doctors with Dr. Karen Kan G and Dr. Dennis Lobstein Episode Notes

People are healthy not by chance, but by design. This episode explores energy-balancing strategies using LifeWave patches to support wellness across a variety of everyday challenges—from physical tension to emotional overwhelm. Drawing on insights from Traditional Chinese Medicine and energy balancing techniques, we discuss the use of specific acupoints and patch pairings to harmonize the body’s natural flow. From navigating emotional overwhelm to addressing physical tension and energetic stagnation, each case demonstrates thoughtful ways to apply phototherapy patches within a general wellness framework—supporting a more balanced, vibrant lifestyle.

Q: I would like a patch recommendation for lumps on my legs and back that feel soft to the touch, with one area that becomes uncomfortable when pressed—what would you suggest?

A: Dr. Dennis and Dr. Karen shared that if a lump is super uncomfortable and warm, it may indicate excess energy, whereas a cold lump may point to a deficiency. In Chinese medicine, swellings can be caused by the accumulation of Damp, which creates Phlegm in the body.

To help disperse this accumulation, Stomach 40 may be used. Dampness can also be addressed with Spleen 9, as the Spleen is particularly sensitive to Damp, poor sleep, and cold foods like ice cream and dairy. If the Earth Element (Spleen/Stomach) is weak, it can hold excess water.

Dr. Dennis recommended considering Spleen 9 on the left and Stomach 40 on the right, applying a Yin/Yang pair of LifeWave phototherapy patches (see earlier descriptions for suggested combinations).

For the painful lump specifically, place the tan patch directly on the area and use the Clock Method to identify the most effective positioning.

Additionally, it’s important to consume enough salt to support the body’s electrolytic functions, which are crucial for intracellular hydration—alongside drinking clean, purified, and structured water.

Q: I would like a patch recommendation for lower back discomfort that I’ve experienced since my teens, with occasional flare-ups and a history of menstrual cramping—how can I best use IceWave?

A: Dr. Dennis and Dr. Karen offered several suggestions for supporting lower back discomfort with LifeWave patches.

It’s recommended to start by using the Clock Method to determine optimal IceWave placement; however, in this case, it did not provide significant relief. Christine shared that the Brain Balance Strategy was much more effective for her, and she began by applying other patches first before returning to IceWave.

Using Aeon behind the right ear, on the back of the neck, or over the throat may help regulate the autonomic nervous system by calming the fight/flight/freeze response.

Dr. Karen mentioned it’s okay to experiment with IceWave on either side of the lower back and place X39 on the pelvis—or reverse the approach by applying IceWave on either side of the uterus and placing X39 on the back. Another option is to place IceWave on the front (either side), and position X39 on the back.

Dr. Dennis noted that energy stagnation in the pelvis may be contributing to referred discomfort in the lower back. He recommended exploring the Support Mountain Strategy and adding X39 to the belly area for added support.

Alternatively, you can activate the Chong Mai channel by placing a patch on Spleen 4 (left foot) and Pericardium 6 (right wrist), which may help address pelvic stagnation.

Q: I would like a patch recommendation for staying focused and grounded when I feel scattered from work-related stress—what do you suggest?

A: Dr. Dennis and Dr. Karen noted that when Yang Qi is “flying,” tonifying Yin can be especially supportive for grounding and focus.

Mulberry can be helpful as part of a Yin-tonifying approach. To nourish Yin, consider using Kidney 3, Governor Vessel 4 (Ming Men, Life Gate), along with Aeon or X39 patches.

The Energy Enhancer patches may also be used within the Five Elements Rotation, with an emphasis on Yin energy. For instance, you can double the number of days using the Water Element points such as Kidney 3 and Bladder 60.

For additional calming support, Pericardium 6 is a highly effective point. Applying Aeon near the head may further enhance grounding and mental clarity under stress.

Q: I would like a patch recommendation for ongoing discomfort on the outside and bottom of my left foot, where I have an old fracture with screws, and pain increases when I curl my toes or turn my foot outward.

A: Dr. Dennis and Dr. Karen suggest that Bladder 65 may support the energetic healing of bone. You can apply Carnosine on the left and Glutathione or Aeon on the right. Alternatively, reserve Aeon to place at the top of the head to support a whole-body effect with the intention of guiding Qi flow throughout the system.

For grounding and energetic flow through the feet, apply IceWave bilaterally at Kidney 1. To further support structural and energetic balance, place X39 on the left at Liver 3 and X49 on the right.

While working with each bone can sometimes be uncomfortable, gentle manual manipulation may assist in restoring harmony. DL Walker is helpful with supporting this with the use of manual therapy.

Yin/Yang Patch Pair

Please note that when we mention the Yin-Yang patch pair, we mean a pairing of two patches, whereby the one on the left is relatively yin compared to the patch on the right.

Examples of Yin/Yang phototherapy patching pairs are:

  • Energy Enhancer: The Tan patch is yin, the White patch is yang
  • IceWave: The Tan patch is yin, the White patch is yang
  • SP6C + Aeon: SP6C on the left (yin), Aeon on the right (yang)
  • Carnosine + Glutathione: Carnosine on the left (relatively yin), and Glutathione (yang) on the right
  • X39 + X49: X39 on the left (yin), X49 on the right (yang)

Yin/Yang meridians pair also refers to patching a Yin acupuncture point on the left side of the body and a Yang acupuncture point on the right side, belonging to the same element.

Examples of Yin/Yang element pairings:

  • Fire: Pericardium/Triple Burner (more emotional) or Heart/Small Intestine (more physical)
  • Earth: Spleen/Stomach
  • Metal: Lung/Large Intestine
  • Water: Kidney/Bladder
  • Wood: Liver/Gallbladder

Approximately 85% or more of individuals experience remarkable outcomes by using the acupuncture points highlighted in the LifeWave brochures, which have undergone thorough research. We recommend that these points be the primary areas to patch.
